Happy 800th Birthday to Magna Carta – a document that is as fresh as the day it was born

When King John signed Magna Carta on that field in Runnymede 800 years ago today, he likely didn’t dream that eight centuries later people would still celebrate its clauses. One clause that continues to fascinate and guide people – perhaps especially people to whom these liberties are denied – is clause 40:

“To none will we sell, to none deny or delay, right or justice.”

Justice is not to be denied or delayed, and it’s not for sale. The Bible teaches the same.

God’s Just Ways

Predating John’s covenant with his subjects by centuries, God told his people:

Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the innocent. (Exodus 23:8.)

It is not good to be partial to the wicked or to deprive the innocent of justice. (Proverbs 18:5.)

These are aspects of justice given to us not by a king facing his nobles on an English meadow west of London, but given by God himself. Let us celebrate his blessings in showing us what true justice looks like.

Thanks for calling attention to this, Tim: that justice is not for sale. A powerful statement.
